CNN did a good job in the period about 1 3/4 to 3 hours after the quake. This might not be a fair comparison because I was watching CNN after about 20 hours past the previous one when they started screwing up. We are getting a local suburban paper dropped free on our driveway so not buying the New York Times....but maybe I'll go to the library to check their coverage. ABC nightly news did present something poorly: The said there was no large tsunami, then they showed a graphic showing a reverse slip earthquake causing a tsunami, then they showed a strike-slip earthquake not causing a tsunami. While they did not state that there was no tsunami because it was a strike-slip quake, they certainly implied it. Two focal mechanisms were available on the USGS-NEIC site long before the broadcast and both show this to be a rather flat thrust earthquake. By the way...I never did contact SCEC to try and get News organizations in touch with competent people. But, I think my emails to CNN and NY Times may have had some effect. Chris
