Northern Ash and Gas Eruptions north of latitude 23°N.

KARYMSKY Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia 54.05°N, 159.43°E; summit elev. 1,536 m (3 km)
seismicity above background levels during 11-18 March, on 12 March possible ash plumes extending ~10 km (6.2 mi) E of the volcano, small ash clouds extending ~7 km (4.4 mi) N, and ash deposits on the southern sector of Karymsky; on 14 March possible ash-and-gas explosions reached heights of ~3 km

KLIUCHEVSKOI Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia 56.06°N, 160.64°E; summit elev. 4,835 m (8.5 km)
eruptive activity continuing during 11-18 March with Strombolian explosions intermittently from a cinder cone in the summit crater with lava flows extending from this cinder cone down the NW flank, occasional vigorous explosions from the summit crater and along the path of the lava flow producing ash plumes that reached as high as 7-8 km and drifting many tens or hundreds of kilometers downwind, ash-and-gas plumes rising to 8.0 km on 11-12 March, Strombolian bursts rose 5.3-5.8 km, on 15 March two lava flows observed on the NW slope; as of 24 March eruptive activity increased, continuous explosions from the summit crater potentially producing ash plumes as high as 10 km; current activity very dangerous to aviation, according to visual and video data a gas-steam plume containing some amounts of ash to ~7.5 km on March 22 and up to ~ 8.5 km on March 23, an ash plume rising to 7.0 km and extending 70-80 km to the north-west observed by pilots at 23:05 UTC on March 23

SHIVELUCH Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia 56.653°N, 161.360°E; summit elev. 3,283 m (5.1 km)
the lava dome continuing to grow during 11-18 March, on 11 March an ash-and-gas plume to a height of ~5.1 km, during 11-12 March gas-and-steam plumes to 4.5 km, satellite imagery showing a thermal anomaly at the lava dome during the report week, and a large thermal anomaly over the recent pyroclastic-flow deposit during 11-12 March

ST. HELENS Washington, USA 46.20°N, 122.18°W; summit elev. 2,549 m (2.6 km)
during 16-21 March growth of the new lava dome continuing, accompanied by low rates of seismicity, low emissions of steam and volcanic gases, and minor production of ash, imagery on 21 February of the highest part of the new lava dome was 12 m higher than on 1 February and the volume of dome and surrounding uplift had increased by 3 million cubic meters during that 3-week period, the average rate of growth about 2 cubic meters per second

Equatorial Ash and Gas Eruptions at less than 23°N or S

ANATAHAN Mariana Islands, central Pacific Ocean 16.35°N, 145.67°E; summit elev. 788 m (4 km)
volcanic activity increased during 14-21 March in comparison to previous weeks, steam rising a few hundred meters above the volcano, the inner East crater nearly filled with lava flows and lapilli since early January; according to seismic data a small eruption beginning on 18 March at 0544 and on 19 March an ash plume visible on satellite imagery below 4 km, small explosions on 20 March lasting for 14 hours

BAGANA Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea 6.14°S, 155.19°E; summit elev. 1,750 m (low)
on 16 March at 2126 a very small plume and hot spot visible on satellite imagery

COLIMA western México 19.514°N,103.62°W; summit elev. ~3,850 m (6.4 km)
moderate ash eruptions continue up to 6.4 km on 23 March

KILAUEA Hawaii, USA 19.43°N, 155.29°W; summit elev. 1,222 m (0)
during 16-21 March lava from PKK lava flow down the Pulama pali fault scarp and onto the coastal flat, lava entering the ocean at the Ka`ili`ili and East Lae`apuki entries

SANTA MARÍA Guatemala 14.756°N 91.552°W; summit elev. 3,772 m (5.1 km)
during 16-21 March several ash explosions, ash plumes to a maximum height of 5.1 km, lava avalanches down the SW flank of Caliente Dome

SOUFRIÈRE HILLS Montserrat, West Indies 16.72°N, 62.18°W; summit elev. 1,052 m (0)
seismic activity at low levels during 11-18 March, the sulfur-dioxide flux ranging between 235 and 630 metric tons per day, with an average of 425 metric tons per day, below the long-term average for the eruption of 500 metric tons per day

SPECIAL NOTE

A Really Destructive Chinese Earthquake

Thanks to Rimidu on Pinpoint-Newsletter (Google).

This paper is an easily read yet intense study of the Tangshan earthquake in 1976, the worst in 400 years in China.
