Well, those suburban trees you have, may have the shed thing going, just like here in CA where it takes a freeze to cause the leaves to fall, but they are outdone by those in Alaska where they bud, bloom and produce leaves all in one day. Nature up there knows the seasons are short, so it speeds up the process.

No big mystery there. I've hardly begun to collect leaves from the local fruitless mulberrys. It isn't cold enough yet for the more sturdy variety.
