Maybe ear tones are produced by the same or similar mechanism that causes earthquake lights. EQ lights were observed for centuries but only proven after they were photographed. If enough people report hearing tones before earthquakes, maybe someone will invent a way to record the sound. Seeing lights requires being near their source, but some tones seem to travel long distances.
