The Wired report that you read was one that had the sign reversed. No damage done, but it does make it harder to understand what is happening.

You're probably right about the max magnitude on the inland thrusts, but our working theories are generally that all earthquakes follow the same mechanics until proven different (talking about tidal influences and friction, not max mag).
