I was fortunate enough to see Kerry give a presentation at CalTech a few years ago... He was of the firm opinion that we can build to withstand earthquakes. And if we just retrofitted one percent of the buildings each year, then within 100 years we would be safe from the dangers of earthquakes.

it seemed pretty sound to me... but unfortunately, not all areas of the world can afford to build to the proper standards and instead rebuild their adobe-brick houses right on top of the old foundations...
