Here's a link (below) to a map of recent baja activity. (the site is a bit slow) The whole area down there is quite shattered with faulting... it seems the stress gets transferred from one area to another quite easily. Isn't the crust rather thin in the area as well? You've got a combination of geothermal activity, rifting, volcanics and quakes... Yes, it seems these things migrate in a generally northern direction (southern mexico, up the gulf and into our desert)...
