Hi Roger. Sorry about that. Didn’t mean to give your e-mail program a case of indigestion. I think the quakes to look at are the ones that are M>6.0 and larger. However we both know that even then you won’t be able to draw any conclusive answer. Even if there were a geomagnetic storm occurring at the time of the quake you still have to show that there was nothing else that could have caused the quake. Even if you could you would still have a hard time in predicting the quake. You have to know how much stress has accumulated in the area since the last major quake and how close it is to breaking. With out that knowledge there isn’t much of a chance in predicting the quake. While short-term prediction is the goal it is still a long ways off despite claims made by some. The only area that I know of right now that has the chance of making a short-term prediction for a large quake is the Bay Area. Even then it’s going to be a chancy thing, as they don’t have the sufficient number of data sites in place to get the best coverage for the Bay Area.
