The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A minor earthquake occurred NEAR RUMFORD, MAINE OR about 40 miles west northwest of Augusta, Maine at 1:16 AM MST today, Jan 17, 2000 (3:16 AM EST in Maine). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 3.4 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may change slightly as additional data are received from other seismograph stations. The earthquake was felt in parts of Oxford and Franklin Counties. There have been no reports of damage


Both quakes were felt throughout the area.
