Here's an email I received from Senator Boxer this evening: "Dear Friend:
There are signs that the science of earthquake prediction is improving. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there is no current way to predict with precision exactly when and where an earthquake will occur. But efforts are underway to develop long-range earthquake probability forecasts in seismically active urban areas, with scientists using models to more precisely predict earthquake activity. One scientist, who has made other successful earthquake predictions, has forecast a quake for the desert portion of Southern California by autumn. This prediction has received substantial attention, including from local police and fire officials who have received briefings from USGS on the likelihood of a quake in coming months. Whether the prediction that an earthquake will strike Southern California before September is true or not, all Californians should be prepared. Our history shows that earthquakes occur with regularity and, sometimes, with ferocity. Being prepared is a sensible step that can save lives and property. On my Senate website, you will find several steps to help guide you in preparing for an earthquake. I encourage you to visit http://boxer.senate.gov/equake.cfm for more information. You can also find out more information about earthquakes by visiting the USGS website at http://www.usgs.gov/ I hope this information is helpful to you and that you will be encouraged to be prepared. If you have questions or comments about this or any other matter, I encourage you to contact me at http://boxer.senate.gov/contact/webform.cfm . Sincerely, Barbara Boxer United States Senator"
