Morocco quake kills at least nine

A strong earthquake has hit northern Morocco killing at least nine people around the Mediterranean port city of Al Hoceima.

A civil defence spokesman in Al Hoceima said the village of Ait Kamara nine miles away was "completely destroyed" and "there are many dead".

The US Geological Survey said the quake measured 6.5 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake was felt in the areas of Al Hoceima, the tourist city of Fez in the interior and Taza.

The US Geological Survey said there had been hundreds of small quakes in the North African region since 1990, but this was the biggest since one of 6.0 struck in 1994.
