Research Idea |
Anyone feel like a new, off-the-wall research idea? Correlate Kp index from the NOAA space weather page (but you would have to dig to find files back to, say, 1989), and do a correlation with aftershocks of large California earthquakes-namely Loma Prieta, Landers, Northridge, Hector Mine, and San Simeon. A separate correlation for each. And, moment release in 3 hour periods (for example) vs Kp, which is done in 3 hour bins. This would not be easy to do, as you would need to convert all the aftershocks to moment-but for seismologists, they probably know how to do this and might just be able to feed a file in. If anyone tracks down a record of the North American Kp readings, let Roger and I know..... Meanwhile, we can see if there was a coronal mass ejection with the M6 today that will induce magnetic storminess at earth's surface (that is what Kp measures). And, is it induces a little flare-up of San Simeon aftershocks. Even if it does, 1 even and 1 event do not make a significant correlation-it needs to be done for aftershock sequences for the course of a year or 2....
