Don Regarding the differences between the named location and the lat/long, I was reminded of the fact that USGS is now using regional names as determined by the Flinn-Engdahl number for many quakes, e.g. Tonga, Vanuatu, Loyalty Islands, etc. A list of the numbers and names can be found at USGS at This does add to the confusion, but I think it simplies statistical study of quakes by keeping regional quakes together.
