Oops, did it again. 1000 time 0.25 is 250, not 2.5. I was supposed to multiply 1000 by 0.25%, not 0.25. That is 1000 times 0.0025. The answer to that is 2.5 (related to earlier post-time of earthquake with 1000 year recurrence is advanced by 2.5 years if there is a 0.25 bar increase in shear stress... Hmm, science...I make these kinds of mistakes, but they generally don't end up in published papers-there are several rows of reviews-by my co-authors, by informal reviewers sometimes, by formal reviewers, and by associate editors, for major journals, by copy editor types...I catch most of my mistakes myself, though. But, there is still a lot of nonsense published (not by me! (IMHO)). In my field, few people seem to understand fold/blind fault models, so there ends up being a lot of stuff that is inconsistent, to put it politely...One example has been featured on the top of the SCEC web page most days for the last 1/2 year.
