Hi Kate. Thank you. I don’t shoot ground squirrels just to be shooting them. It’s a matter of economics. The rancher friend of mine had to put a $16,000 horse to sleep because it stepped into a squirrel hole and broke its leg. That takes place more often then one would think. There is a large creek on the property that used to be filled with trout. The squirrels dug holes into banks the when the water was low. During the winter the water would flow deep fill the holes, which in turn would cause the banks to collapses and cause the water to muddy. Fish couldn’t breath in it and died. The other problem is that squirrels have fleas and fleas have been known to carry the Bubonic Plague. He won’t use poison, as poison is non-discriminating. That leaves the only one option at that is to shoot them. Don’t feel to sorry for them. I can assure you for everyone we shoot there are at least 100 that come to funeral.
