I am fascinated both by the official attitude and the obvious occurrence of "remotely triggered quakes". Fortunately chains of quakes show that the effect sizzles down, sometimes after several quakes, most often after one or two. Last year there were a pair of 7M quakes south of Fiji that brought no early aftershocks. I think this was due in part to the close approach of the moon in apogee. On the other hand in recent months I have seen this effect produce big quakes at the apogee, with a pause in activity afterwards until the moon was at maximum earthward velocity.

This attitude of Californian seismologists obviously did not persuade lay seismos out there, and indeed I learned of "ping pong" quakes from a lovely lady out there.

Fortunately for us such "remotely triggered quakes" tend to be of the same magnitude or less, but there have been occasional significantly higher magnitude quakes.

That is what makes this hobby interesting.
