Freund's ideas are just that, not observations. I've seen him speak, and he makes a not-very-convincing argument that stress build-up could lead to charge build-up.

No one has seen such a charge build-up with existing sensitive instruments, so just plugging wires into the ground is unlikely to make a light bulb glow.
