Miagi, Japan Earthquake

Hi All. I watched the news on NHK tonight about the latest quake in Japan.

It appears the quake was a thrust quake. People report that it felt like they were being tossed into the air. The “moment tensor solution” indicates that it was a thrust quake. It centered in the small town of Miagi, which is located about 15 miles north of Sendai. Looking at the number of seismographs that recorded the quake it appears the energy from the quake propagated towards the north. There appears to have been one reported foreshock to the M>6.2 quake. This quake was located about 10 miles south of the main event.

No deaths have been reported so far, with a little more then 200 people injured. There were no fires. Damage was wide spread with most of the damage occurring in the town of Miagi. There were a number of homes that were totaled. There were a large number of homes that were damaged to the extent they may not be able to repair them. Most of the infrastructure remains intact.

There have been a number of aftershocks, which have been occurring about every half hour. Some have been strong enough to cause more damage. An aftershock occurred while they were reporting the news and you had no problem knowing they were having a quake. The telephone lines and other lines were swinging back and forth. Some people were walking like drunken sailors aboard ship.

All rail service in and out of the area has been shut down due to damage to the tracks with one train derailment. No cars in the train tipped over.

There was some damage to main roads in the area, but not sever enough to shut them down. Following the white line on one road you could see where the road had been offset about 2 inches with parts of road dropping or rising at least 3 inches in some areas.

There were some slides in the surrounding area. Most of the slides appeared to be in the area where rice paddies that are set on terraces had slide down near the edge of town. Some homes were completely swept off their foundations.

They are having a lot of rain in the area, which for the most part is making life miserable, but not unbearable. Take Care…Don in creepy town
