The 1906 Quake. What Did I Learn?

Hi All. Every now and then I take on task is which there are times I learn something, or nothing at all, or that I’m in over my head. In this case I’m 3 for 3. I learned that if I learned something I don’t know what it was and most likely I am in over my head.

Using the “California Earthquake History 1769-Present (2000) I took only the quakes that occurred in the Bay Area and other locations that could have an affect on the Bay Area to see if I could make any sense out of them in regards to the 1906 quake.

24 Jun 1808 San Francisco 6.0
10 Jun 1836 Hayward Valley 6.75
? Jun 1838 San Francisco Peninsula 7.0
15 Feb 1856 San Francisco Peninsula 5.5
9 Jan 1857 Great Fort Tejon quake [San Buenaventura; Santa Cruz] 8.25
26 Nov 1858 San Jose Area 6.25
26 Feb 1864 Santa Cruz Mountains 6.0
5 Mar 1864 East of San Francisco Bay 5.75
8 Oct 1865 Santa Cruz Mountains 6.5
21 Oct 1868 Hayward Fault [San Jose] 7.0
17 Feb 1870 Los Gatos 6.00
2 Feb 1881 Parkfield 5.75
6 Mar 1882 Hollister 5.75
26 Mar 1884 Santa Cruz Mountains 6.0
12 Apr 1885 South Diablo Range (by Fremont) 6.25 When I plotted this quake on the map it came out near Bitterwater in San Benito County
19 May 1889 Antioch (by Fremont) 6.25
24 Apr 1890 Pajaro Gap (by San Juan Bautista) 6.25
19 Apr 1892 Vacaville (by Sonoma) 6.5
21 Apr 1892 Winters (by Sonoma) 6.25
13 Nov 1892 Hollister 5.75
20 Jun 1897 Gilroy 6.25
31 Mar 1898 Mare Island (by Sonoma) 6.5
6 Jul 1899 Morgan Hill (by San Juan Bautista) 5.75
3 Mar 1901 Parkfield 6.4
11 Jun 1903 San Jose 5.5
3 Aug 1903 San Jose 5.5
18 Apr 1906 Great 1906 San Francisco Quake [San Juan Bautista; San Antonio; S.F. Solano] 8.25 When I plotted this quake I found that it occurred near Daly City. There are still some questions about where it actually occurred.

On 22 March 1957, an earthquake centered in the Daly City area that caused damage in Westlake District of that city, and some damage in San Francisco rocked the San Francisco Peninsula. Although only magnitude 5.3, this was the largest earthquake on the Peninsula since 1906.

Recent work, which has attempted to find the epicenter of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, has suggested an epicenter on or near the Peninsula.

Originally, this epicenter was thought to be at Point Reyes, but work using distant seismograms suggests a more southerly epicenter.

According to Richard Marsden because it now appears that the Daly City earthquake occurred in the region where the 1906 earthquake was centered, the 1957 event suddenly becomes more important for scientists, as well as the people who live and work in the Bay Area. (See link for explanation.)

There were some other quakes listed, but I didn’t use them as no date, or magnitude was given for them.

What did I learn? Well, first of all it could be said that there was an indication that a large quake was on its way, but the location and when couldn’t be determined. There just isn’t enough history to do that. From what I have seen occur since the 1906 quake I would have to say we are headed for another one, but again the location and when can’t be determined. Take Care…Don in creepy town
