M3.7 Tennessee-Arkansas+geomagnetic

April 30 This morning there was a 3.7 on the Tennessee-Arkansas border. This is a long distance from the 4.9 on the Georgia-Alabama northern border. This latest quake is probably related to structures of the New Madrid zone (I'd have to check). Also, this morning there has been continuous "red" on the Kp graph of geomagnetic activity. This was not the case for the 4.9. Do I think the 2 quakes are related? Yes. Do I have any idea how they are related? No. Do I think the magnetic storminess triggered the 3.7? I don't know. Do I think that seismologists would have said the 2 quakes were a coincidence before 1992? Yes. Do I think they would say it is a coincidence this time? Probably depends on which one (John V?). I'd like to see a graph of long-duration high Kp index vs unusual intraplate earthquakes. On the other hand, California looks really quiet the last 24 hours. Back to a proposal to work on the Red Mountain fault, offshore Santa Barbara.- Chris
