Don, I found a reference to the contradiction of soft faults by Duncan's strain meters. Durmid Hill, which is just 1.5 km from the San Andreas, shows the same strain as Pinyon Flat, which is far from any fault. However, most people would expect that 1.5 is outside of the zone that is softened around the fault, although Fialko's recent measurements appraoch that distance. Most soft fault claims are limited to within a 100m to 1km of the fault. John
