Re: Thomas McEvilly, Parkfield-The Next Large Quake |
Hi Carol. It does give one something to think about. When you consider that the known quakes to have occurred in the area were in 1934, 1922, 1901, 1881, and 1857. The history before 1857 doesn’t appear to be known. I’m sure you are well aware of the 1857 Fort Tejon quake. This quake occurred about 2 months after the M>6.0 quake near Parkfield. The 1857 Fort Tejon quake is now thought to have occurred in the area of Chalome, not Fort Tejon. It was called the Fort Tejon because at the time it was the only known principle place around. The magnitude of this quake has been set at M>7.9 to M>8.3. However the off set of the San Andreas fault in the 1906 quake was 21 feet. The off set measured in dry streambeds for the 1857 quake was 29 feet. I have a problem with this though. No mention was made as to when the measurements were taken. Were they taken right after the quake, or years after the quake? Some of the off set could have occurred before the 1857 quake, but I’m not sure if they could tell the difference. At any rate the quake was a good shaker. It was strong enough to rock southern and central California, uprooting trees in the San Bernardino Mountains and causing the Kern River to flow backwards for a time. I bet that confused the fish. It is indeed something to think about, but not for long. I get a headache when I start thinking.
