Re: Bush Declares Disaster Area in Alaska After Quake

Hi Jan,

Thanks for posting that report and the terrific picture as well. I would like to remind our readers that FEMA will not allocate payments for earthquake damage without a declaration of a disaster area from the President.

This important to know because if a moderate earthquake strikes a small region and the disaster declaration does not materialize, you are on your own for the damages, unless you have your own personal earthquake insurance.

I am most curious to learn how much will be allocated to victims in Alaska who had major damage and would reach the maximum limit FEMA will pay. Today that number is not known. Of course I asked about a year ago and as usual, got no response. In 1989 at the time of Loma Prieta the maximum payment was $100,000. I hope for those Alaskan's in need, the benefit has increased over time.
