Next Port Of Call |
Hi All, Don and I have decided our next port of call for field trips will be Fort Ross. No longer can we say "The Russians Are Coming" because they've been and gone. Actually from 1812 to 1841, however, we've been researching to determine if during the Russian occupation they made any notes in their daily logs or diaries about earthquakes. So far, we haven't found a trace. The area is rich in significant paleoseismic activity with records indicating at least three and possibly five major earthquakes rocking this area approximately every 300 years. This includes the 1906 earthquake. Heavy trenching efforts have been made over the years, so its not a place which has not been studied. Actually, many geoscientists from UCB and others such as archeologists have taken a very keen interest in Fort Ross. Jan, you're invited when we put this trip on the calendar, but we're not going without full knowledge of the area's we would be most interested in, so we won't have to make ten or so trips to get it right. This is a one banger. LOL We don't want another argument to ensue like the one we have had 20 or more times about whether Squaw Rock was really Squaw Rock. See what I mean? This time we know the Fort is there, we know the Russians were there, we shall be there, but fully prepared with GPS and topo map in hand.
