hurricanes follow upper level winds |
Meteorologists would say that hurricanes follow steering currents. If they are built up vertically, they will be steered by upper level winds. If the deep convection disappears (as the storm becomes weaker), then lower level flow will tend to steer them. If they move over warm water, they become stronger (other conditions, like wind sheer with height, being the same).
