The tsunamis that have hit the coast of California have originated in Alaska. The beautiful places in California that you worry will be "wiped out" are in much more danger of earthquakes in their own state than to suffer tsunamis damage from Japan. And if the theories about several very large earthquakes waiting to happen in California come true, it won't just be beauty that is destroyed, but many many lives as well.
