Hi Lowell & Carol,

One thing that has changed a lot since the olden days is the advent of the video camera. In populated areas these days often one can film earthquakes in the process. This is the case with the Landers/Big Bear event. I can recall a man with a video camera at an observatory and he grabbed the camera and was filming as he was running out. At the same time he was yelling to his partner to get out. There were some very long and wide fissures at that location.

I was mentioning in the string below about the lecture Don and I sat in on a couple of years ago about Landers/Big Bear causing stress to go eastward and eventually bringing on the Hector Mines quake, so it does seem they are related.

I think almost everyone here must be keenly aware of the absense of a large quake for more than a month. I do not recall when the last 7.0 occurred, but keep wondering how much longer we can go without having one somewhere in the world.

Unfortunately somewhere in the world also includes California and most people in general I think believe we are approaching the day when the big one won't be somewhere else. Don and I were talking about this subject earlier this evening by telephone and I told him my bets were on Pacifica and environs. To me, its all to obvious.

Thanks Lowell for the reminder.

Petra
