devastating earthquake did not happen yesterday, but will eventually |
Cathyrn, I sent the email to Petra. If you know her, no reason now for her not to send it to you (but not through this page). The email warning was that a devastating earthquake would strike San Andreas California on Tuesday June 4. I'm in California now, and I had no trouble sleeping. It was a no-brainer for me to not post this. But, the earthquake might have occurred. The last 13 years or so there have been quite a few M6.6 and larger earthquakes in California on the broader San Andreas fault system. There is maybe a 1 in 1500 chance on any given day that such an earthquake will occur, and maybe 1 in 3000 that it will heavily damage a populated area. Maybe 1 in 10,000 that it will be a large earthquake on the San Andreas fault itself (I'm making up these numbers, but they are in the ballpark). So, if San Bernadino (for example) had been leveled yesterday, I would have been curious but not felt guilty. By the way, I don't work for USGS, and can post what I want. But, my credibility is important to my ability to get funding and have publications accepted, and my posting on this page under off-the-wall threads, out of context, could damage my credibility if seen out of context. Hence, "chris in suburbia".
