Petra and Canie are correct in their comments. However, some surface faults become "blind" (buried) along their strike, so the length of the fault that can rupture can be longer than the surface part. And, earthquakes can jump between faults (e.g., Landers, 1992). And, the same fault can have different names for different pieces-especially if part is onshore and part is offshore. I'm kind of cranky today-2 rejections in one day-major proposal (as lead) and a paper (as second author). Roger, got any openings on your route?
