Hi Petra, Your post is VERY interesting. I've also wondered about those little faults everywhere that never get mapped and may only be capable of a 4+ quake. Do you think there are faults out there that have reoccurence levels of 100s of years for 4 pointers like the San Andreas has for its 8+ quakes? Could last night's quake or the Yountville quake been such one where it takes over 100 years to be locked and build up stress and then gives it all in a 5.3? Are there even faults that stay locked and then expell all their energy in even 1 or 2s? If so, these faults would be interesting to study. I imagine they would yield a lot of clues and in their simple forms might give info about what the bigger ones are like. It would be interesting if there was one master map out there that showed the tiniest of tiny faults every was suspected.
