Earthquake Summary For The West Coast Plus

Hi All. I’m not trying to replace Lowell. Lords knows there is no way I could do that. Just thought I would at least try to give a summary of today’s events and my take on them.

Unfortunately I don’t have access to the same data that Lowell has, but will try to muddle my way through it.

If you find it useful I will continue. If not then I won’t.

A strong swarm of microquakes occurred today at Mt. Hood, Oregon. This swarm included four events of 2.0Ml+. So far this appears to be the strongest one-day swarm near Mt. Hood since January 11, 1999, and the second strongest swarm ever recorded at Mt. Hood at the 2.0Ml+ level. I’m wondering if this swarm is in anyway related to the most recent activity off the Coast of Oregon and California

There were some smaller swarms that occurred over several days in September 2001; Dec 2001; Feb. 1998; and April 1996.

The current activity at Mt. Hood appears to have begun on 23 April following the strong geomagnetic storms of late April. Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens have also seen an increase in microquakes since that geomagnetic storm. I’m not sure if the effects from the storm may be the cause of the current quake activity.

It was another relatively quiet day on the global seismicity scene today. The largest earthquake occurred was a 5.1ML in the northern Molucca Sea, south of Mindanao, Philippines. Two earthquake were also were registered in the past two days
in the Fiji Islands. They were 4.2 and 4.6Mb. There was also a 4.8Mb quake off the Coast of Honshu. There was also a 4.7Mb in the South Sandwich Islands and in the Solomon Islands there was a 4.4Mb as well as a 4.7Mb in Ecuador. There were two quakes in Bangladesh. They were 4.4 and 4.0Mb. . A moderate event was also located near Castlepoint, New Zealand and was a 4.5Ml.

Activity continued along mid-ocean ridges with events of 3.9Mb in the Arctic Ocean; Mb 4.5 in the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge and 4.3 Mb in the Greenland Sea area.

The strongest events of the day were in the continuing swarm off the coast of Northern California WNW of Punta Gorda, CA. They were a 3.3 and 3.1Ml. However, other areas were active with events in the upper 2-range of magnitudes. There were four events of 2.0 Ml+ in the Mt. Hood OR region. The largest was a 2.8Ml. A 2.8Ml also occurred near Challis, Idaho, Petra should enjoy this one even though she didn’t feel it. This is the largest in that region since a 3.9Ml on January 22, 2002. Can’t help but feel that this swarm is somehow related to the Ferndale quake in this quake occurred within the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

In addition to the 3Ml quakes off the northern Coast of California, there were also events of 2.8Ml south of Olancha in the Coso Junction region with an aftershock of Ml 2.2. There was a 2.7Ml near the Geysers in northern California and a minor swarm near San Juan Bautista including events of Ml 2.2, 2.0, and 2.5. A 2.0Ml also occurred near New Idria, west of Parkfield this afternoon. Didn’t feel any of those near San Juan Bautista.

In the region of southern California events of 2.2Ml occurred at Big Bear City. There was 2.6Ml at Obsidian Butte; and the swarm near the town of Lake Isabella continued with earthquakes of 2.1 and 2.5Ml.

The largest earthquake in Alaska was a 3.5Ml near the Cook Inlet region of southern Alaska.

Well that’s it for the day. Take Care…Don in creepy town
