I find it scientifically interesting that (southern) California EQ activity seems to go through these active and inactive periods. And, this is not just aftershocks. Is this just statistically variable? Wouldn't you expect more of a random noise pattern about some mean in activity? Is there something going on like triggering or big mid crustal decollements creeping periodically? Should GPS data show this.
