Out on the Earthquake Trail in Olema, not far from Bodega Bay there are posters along the trail giving information about the 1906 earthquake and other informative facts. One of them clearly states that it would take 30,000 5.0 quakes to release enough energy relieve the stress from one 8.0 quake.

Thousands of people walk the trail every year which gives me pause to hope that they can understand we are in no way making any progress towards putting off the big one.
