underground fur creature

a few (8?) years ago I was walking along the edge of the cliffs on NE Santa Cruz Island with another geologist, and there was a skylight about 1/4-1/2 m in diameter to a tunnel. A very shaggy mammal went scurrying by underground. I was about 2 m from the hole, and the other geologist was about 3 m away-we both saw it. The animal was about the size of an island fox, but it did not look like a fox (I have seen plenty of those above ground. There are only a few mammals on the island: feral pigs, sheep (or did the NPS succeed in getting rid of these now) skunks, and hanta virus-infested mice, bats....that's about it. The fur creature looked like none of these. Chris
