One interesting theory which I heard about dinosaur size is that plant life at that time had so little nutritional value that the dinosaurs had to consume tremendous quantities of it in order to obtain enough calories to sustain life. And larger dinosaurs were more efficient.

Today's plants contain more digestible material. And the creatures eating them can afford to be smaller.
