I have studied most of the world's major religions, lived two years at a Buddhist monastery in California, been an avid outdoor enthusiast and an organic gardener. I have successfully had out of body experiences, seen my past life, and have a psychic attunement to mechanical things (I literally started a car once by kicking the tire and verbally told someone I was going to do it before actually doing it.)

I fully appreciate where you are leading with the ability to hear ear tones that are not audible. Speaking from experience, I can say that in the case of animals, if they are hearing by way of magnetite or any other physical substance, then they are listening to physical radiations, whether sound, high frequency, ELF waves or other radiation. If they are listening on the level of the subtle body, then it is a subtle body attunement to a subtle body force. If the earth is emitting a subtle body force, which it could since all things in the physical universe can only exist due to a living force, then the mind has to be attuned to the process.

Ancient mystics, having lots of time on their hands, spent lifetimes developing meditations and visualizations that enhanced these subtle body energies. If you live near Berkeley, you may want to take a course at Nyingma Institute called Kum Nye. Kum Nye is Tibetan for "subtle body energy." In this course you learn to simultaneously release the tension of the body and attune the mind such that you can perceive with greater clarity the most subtle sensations. I took the 9 month program and was able to suddenly do back flips without practice and run miles with ease at great speeds barely touching the ground and not losing a single breath. I also developed an inner sense that helps me to see and hear things most people miss.

I believe this practice of Kum Nye would help you considerably in your studies.
