Ditto on Petra's WELCOME to earthwaves.

There were several earthquake of Ml 2.4 and 2.5 and 2.2 northeast of your location
in the past two weeks. This is a strong increase in activity for that area and may
have been something of a precursor.
I did a search of earthquake of Ml>=3.5 within 100 km of Huntsville and found
the following earthquakes have occurred and been recorded:

MO DA HR MN SC YEAR LAT N LONG W DEP ML MAGNITUDE

5 29 7 30 0 1902 35.100 -85.300 0 4.2
10 18 22 0 0 1902 35.000 -85.300 0 4.2
3 30 4 20 0 1922 35.500 -86.700 0 3.8
6 16 12 0 0 1927 34.700 -86.000 0 4.2
10 8 12 56 0 1927 35.100 -85.300 0 3.5
6 24 10 27 0 1939 34.700 -86.600 0 3.8
9 8 9 45 0 1941 35.000 -85.300 0 3.8
8 12 18 6 1 1959 34.789 -86.562 5 3.8
2 18 9 31 10 1964 34.665 -85.392 1 4.4
8 9 2 42 6 1984 34.629 -86.295 8 3.5
10 9 11 54 26 1984 34.775 -85.193 14 4.2
4 5 22 22 0 1994 34.969 -85.491 24 3.5

As you can see this is the first sizable quake in the area since 1994. There
is a tendency for these events to occu in pairs - for example Oct 9 and Aug 9, 1984;
June 16 and Oct. 8, 1927 and May 29 and October 18, 1902. So in 3 of the nine
cases a second event occurs several months later. I guess that means the
odds a light to moderate aftershock are about 1 in 3, pretty good odds.

Areas like Huntsville which are located near old mountains often have earthquakes
which are accompanied by loud reports and other noises. These are very common
in some areas of the Appalachians and northeast U.S. and in the extension
of the Appalachians in Scotland and England.
