A new? theory on how thought and memories are stored and retrieved

Some of you interested in the interaction of mental processes and electromagnetic
fields might find the following article interesting - no magnetite required.
"Brain may forge some memories in waves" by B. Bower, Science News vol 160,
Nov. 10, 2001.
Jurgen Fell of the University of Bonn, Germany and colleages have reported research
that shows that some membories may hinge more on timing than on the strength
of neural activity. As subjects study word lists, groups of neurons in certain areas
of the brain adjacent to areas associated with memory fire synchronized electrical
bursts that pave the way for remembering those words later, he says. This cell
activity appears to plummet for a fraction of a second after participants remember
a word on the list, perhaps signaling the end of a concentrated effort.
In other words, memory (and thoughts in general) may emerge when neurons
synchronously oscillate and then desynchronize.
Some of the scientists involved in this work believe that such synchronized neural
firing, which results in brain waves is at the root of perception and memory, although
other argue that this type of neuronal firing merely supports a sense of familiarity
with a subject.

If some thoughts and memories are related to the sequence of firings in the
brain, what happens when a strong external oscillating electric, magnetic
or electromagnetic wave encounters the brain. Can this trigger or rekindle
memories - or create new thoughts. Could very sensitive people sense this
triggering in another person through electrical fields leading to something
akin to mental telepathy?

It these results are correct, perhaps magnetitie has little or nothing to do
with the effects of electromagnetic fields on the brain. Maybe it is all a wave
function?
