GLOBAL SEISMICITY AT MODERATELY HIGH LEVELS/ CENTRAL AMERICA ESPECIALLY ACTIVE SUMMARY Global seismicity increased considerably over the past day beginning with the Mw 6.1 in the Caribbean Sea north of Panama. As noted in the previous report, this was an unusual earthquake. It is also interesting, however, that the epicenter of this event was close to the location of the origin of the tropical depression which grew into Hurricane Michelle. NHC gives this location as about 12N 83W. The Mw 6.1 today occurred at 10N 82W. The Caribbean Sea earthquake had been expected as a result of both geomagnetic and hurricane effects in these reports. A number of additional events in the region of Central America of Mb>=4 occurred over the past two days including those in Veracruz Mexico (Mb 4.4); Oaxaca, Mexico (Mb 4.1); and a Mb 4.2 in the El Salvador region. This later event was the first felt earthquake in El Salvador in more than a month. GLOBAL Seismicity along mid-ocean ridges continued high today as well. Events since our last report were listed in the South Sandwich Islands (Mb 5.3, 4.6); the West Chile Rise (Mb 4.7) and the Reykjanes Ridge (Mb 5.4). Many other areas of the world also saw increased activity today. In Asia a Mb 5.0+ was recorded in Taiwan tonight after a Mb 4.2 earlier in the day south of Taiwan. In the Island groups east of Asia events were recorded in the Mariana Islands (Mb 4.8); the Volcano Islands (Mb 4.1); and the Kuril Islands (Mb 4.9). In the Islands south of Asia earthquakes were listed in Sulawesi (Mb 5.1); Vanuatu (Mb 4.8); the Santa Cruz Islands (Mb 4.9) and New Britain (Mb 4.9). An earthquake of Ml>4 was also noted in the Kyrgyzstan region of central Asia. Several unusual earthquakes were also located (with preliminary epicenters) in Europe. These occurred in Italy (Ml 4.0) and Northern Algeria (Mb 4.7 (SED)). Two earthquakes with Ml about 3 were also seen near the French-Swiss border. U.S./CANADA Seismicity in the U.S. and Canada remained relatively quiet for the second day today. There were no earthquakes in the region (outside Alaska) recorded with Ml>=3. The largest since last report occurred in the Rat Islands, Alaska (Mb 4.0). The largest outside Alaska were two of Ml 2.3 in southern California. In the California/Nevada area, the largest events of the day were Ml 2.3's WNS of Eagle Mountain, CA -about 80 km west of Anza in southern California and in at Goldstone Lake about 150 km north of Anza, also in southern California. Other events in So. California of Ml>=2 occurred at Yucca Valley (Ml 2.2); Yucaipa (Ml 2.2); Lake Isabella (Ml 2.0); and Taft (Mb 2.1). Northern and central California were very quiet with the only events of Ml>=2, two Ml 2.0's near the Geysers. Two unusual events of Ml 1.6 and 1.5 hit this afternoon west of Parkfield at New Idria and King City, CA. The largest events along the Central portion of California were Ml 1.2 and 1.0 in the Gilroy and Livermore regions. A Ml 2.2 was recorded in the Kelly, WY area, the largest event in the mountain and Pacific northwest today. In the Pacific northwest, the only event of Ml>=1 was a Ml 1.5 N. of Wenatchee, WA. No new events were listed in eastern Canada or U.S. today. NEW ZEALAND Two moderate earthquakes hit the area surround the Cook Strait in the past 24 hours. These occurred near Nelson on South Island (Ml 5.3) and along the Kapiti coast on North Island (Ml 4.7). A third unlocated event of Ml>3.5 can also be found on the on-line seismogram from IGNS. The two large events were subjects of IGNS reports and were both felt in their respective regions. The IGNS on-line Seismometer can be found at: http://www.gns.cri.nz/news/earthquakes/latest_drum.html GEOMAGNETIC/SOLAR FIELDS The geomagnetic field remained at very quiet levels today, however five M-Class solar flares were observed with the following parameters: Flare # START MAX END CLASS 2500 + 0119 0133 0149 M1.6 2550 + 0520 0539 0548 M3.1 2600 + 0841 0856 0908 M3.3 2610 0915 0943 1001 M3.0 2710 + 1823 1841 1924 M1.9 Seismicity in California/Nevada at the times of these flares included: 2550 0537 36.5N 121.1W Ml 1.4 2600 0915 34.0N 117.1W Ml 2.2 2719 1839 34.5N 116.5W Ml 1.9 2719 1910 33.5N 116.5W Ml 1.7 The reason for adding this type of data is that if these events are triggered by the flares, they may be "hair-triggered". This could imply this is an area where a moderate or strong earthquake is in the making - (or not), but it is only possible to know if this is the case by looking at these over period of time and seeing where the subsequent larger earthquakes occur. TROPICAL STORMS No tropical storms are currently active in the North Atlantic, Caribbean or eastern Pacific today. Typhoon Lingling is currently east of Sumatera and headed southwest toward the Andaman Islands. Both areas are highly seismic. Low pressure over Sumatera would lift that Island off the subducting slab reducing normal stress and lessening friction. Seismicity seems likely to increase in the region over the next three days due to this effect. For a public advisory see: http://www.wunderground.com/auto/HurricaneSite/tropical/wp200101.public.html TIDAL TRIGGERING (LUNAR) Statistics have been done on many regions of the world in terms of relationship of significant regional earthquakes with respect to lunar cycle. Each report will summarize the most likely areas for tidal triggering for the next day based on these statistics. It is expected that tidal triggering will add an additional 0.5 - 1.0 units of magnitude to events which are about to occur or will move these events forward in time by up to seven days in the regions where there is a statistical correlation between lunar phase and earthquakes. November 10 is twenty-five days after the beginning the lunar month Regions most likely to experience tidal triggering on this day (With associated magnitude ranges; the percent change in seismicity rate over background seismicity rate on this day of the lunar month; statistical z-value and significance level) are: Region Magnitude range %change z-value Significance level Antarctica MB>=4.0 343 2.8 0.02 India MB>=4.0 48 2.0 0.05 Yellowstone MB>=2.0 20 2.1 0.05 Regions expected to experience reverse triggering (i.e. they are unlikely to experience a significant event at this period of the lunar cycle) are: Region Magnitude range %change z-value Significance level Arctic MB>=4.0 -36 -2.3 0.05 EARTHQUAKE LISTINGS GLOBAL OCEANIA O: 09NOV2001 05:36:10 53.1N 35.2W MB=5.4 NEIS REYKJANES RIDGE O: 08NOV2001 17:42:55 27.6S 65.7E MB=5.2 NEIS INDIAN OCEAN TRIPLE JUNCTION
