In Search of Twins Past |
Hi All, Yeah, it was a double in October of 1969 in Santa Rosa, CA. A 5.6 immediately followed by a 5.7. Shook up the entire Bay Area. Today Don and I went in search of the epicenter of these two quakes. When I was in Santa Rosa earlier this week I thought I spotted a fault scarp and so we checked it out today. Well, sort of. We had a serious look and took some photos with Don's zoom on his camera. When the photos are developed (providing I did it right) we'll send them via e-mail to Lowell and Roger H for expert opinions. But what a day for field work. Its was incredibly warm, sunny and clear. The location where we were in Santa Rosa is very near a Kaiser Foundation hospital, which is of course so normal here in that they build almost all of the hospitals right on top of or really near active faults. Go figure huh? But in the midst of city chaos was this little street that led into the shallow hills and just below this fault scarp was a natural animal habitat. We got to see some cute gray squirrels foraging around and there was evidence in the field of deer. It was peace and serene dispite being really close to a busy four lane highway. Don took three GPS readings as we went along the path of the Rodgers Creek Fault and now he will have to compare notes with the catalogs to see how close we were to the epicenter. But be sure, we'll find it, hopefully not with a house right on top of it. I would really love it if one day everyone from this board could find a locale that suits everyones taste in geological studies and we novices could benefit from the experts in field exploration. Of course, with good weather. Everyone who wants to meet in Nevada raise their hands now. Petra & Don, near the RCF & loving it.
