The becquerel is the SI unit of radioactive activity; 1 becquerel represents one disintegration or other nuclear transformation, per second, i.e. 1 curie = 37 X10**9 becquerel. It was named afer A.H. Becquerel (1952-1908) the French physicist who discovered radioactivity in 1896.
