Hi All. Being as how I’m a person who likes to know where things are in relation to a well known location I decided to look for the exact location of this quake. 1.9 2001/11/01 02:46:18 37.444N 119.012W 6.7 23 km (14 mi) S of Mammoth Lakes, CA. What I found is that it is located about 3 miles north of Thomas Edison Lake, which has an elevation of 7,612 feet. This is very close to the backbone of the Sierra Nevada’s. Using the NEIC map there have been 24 quakes above 2.8Md since 1978 although I’m sure there have been more that were smaller then this one. The largest one I could find was a 4.0Ml that occurred on 07/18/1992. There are two periods in which there was an above average quake occurrence. The first was in May of 1980 with 5 quakes and in 1998 with 6 quakes. 4 of them in June and 2 in July. This is based on a 5-mile radius using the epicenter of the above quake. I rather doubt that any of these quakes are related to volcanic activity (I could be wrong), but are more indicative of the continuous rising of the Sierra Nevada’s. I have done a lot of deer hunting in this area and I’m here to tell there is an abundance of past volcanic activity can be seen. The Mono Hot Springs are located about 8 miles south of the quake epicenter. I would use the hot springs to soak in and ease the ache of tired weary bones. By the way the temperature of the water is 107 degrees. I have contacted the owner of the hot springs on a couple of occasions to see if there had been any change in the water temperature since the 1980 quakes in the Mammoth Lakes area and he advised me there hasn’t been any change. For those who would like to see this area be advised that the road is unmaintained and you need to insure you have plenty of gas. I would recommend using a 4x4 to get there. Take Care…Don in creepy town
