Re: Geysers heating up

Hi Billion,

The earthquakes at The Geysers Geothermal Field are not an indicator of any coming earthquakes of larger magnitudes. It is when the frequency of the interval of the erupting geyser changes that is a harbinger of an impending quake.

For example, The Calistoga Geyser is monitored for changes in geyser eruption schedules. Prior to some larger earthquakes within 200 miles of its location the intervals of eruptions have changed to longer periods inbetween. Prior to Loma Prieta in 1989 it went from 15 minute intervals to 2.5 hour intervals. These are similar to what occurred in Morgan Hill in 1984 and Oroville, CA (I don't recall the year.)

But in the Geysers Geothermal Field which is all contained in pipes you can't use it because its a whole different banana. This area frequently has 3.0 or greater quakes as well as 1000's of small quakes per year, so it does't help.

When things seem like they are going to break lose around here, I call the owner of the Calistoga Geyser to check on erupting intervals to see if it has changed. Unfortunately, it is not on-line and it doesn't appear it will be at any time in the near future. It actually is a science project of Dr. Paul Silver of Carneghie and thus the results are really his to do with as he sees fit.

I hope this helps.

Petra
