Some thoughts on the current Los Angeles earthquake sequence. It was pointed out on this board by Manda on 21 October (post #10216 in archives) that the current sequence of earthquakes in the general Los Angeles area tend to occur on Sundays. I checked the SCSN catalog for 2001 and found that all 7 events of Ml>=3 in this sequence have, indeed occurred on a Sunday (including today's). I wonder what the random probability of that is? The sequence also appears to be moving from NW to SE. In the list below note that the first events on 14 January occurred at about 34.3N 118.4W and have gradually moved SE to today's epicenters at 33.9N 118.26W. This suggest the segment of the fault in that region (about 50 km long) may be ready to rupture in an earthquake of ML>6. Today's earthquakes were followed by regional events including a Ml 2.2 near Pine Flat and a Ml 2.6 near Mammoth Lakes within 30 minutes of the Ml 3.7 mainshock. I expect the mainshock may be triggering areas already under stress from the strong geomagnetic storm that began this morning and is currently in progress. Earthquakes of Ml>=3 in the L.A. sequence during 2001
