Somewhat surprisingly I got some good responses from the Fortran Newsgroup people. They said that the program is sufficiently similar to modern Fortran that it can actually be compiled and probably also translated. So a True Basic version might be possible.

Both Perl and Python are too slow. And I gather you are not interested in working with Fortran.
