SONGS closed |
I heard 2nd hand, but from people who would know, that San Onofre Nuclear Generating station (SONGS) will be permanently closed. Maybe they heard this in the California press, so you Californians heard it also. But Southern California Edison still has to be concerned about earthquake and tsunami hazard because of the high level nuclear waste stored on site. I checked on this a year ago: SONGS produced something approaching 10% of California's electricity. Not sure what it is being replaced with: I'd guess natural gas burning plants. SONGS had already been shut down for quite a long time because of some kind of mechanical problem. I'm working on a report to USGS that covers the faults between Santa Monica and San Diego, so is relevant.
