Only experienced scientists who can look at things with a good perspective will fully understand the following. But most people should understand the general ideas.

Logic and calculations would suggest that the gravity pull of Jupiter etc. on the Earth would not be strong enough to trigger earthquakes. However, when checking for effects such as those there can be times when there are observations that are significant. And the actual reason behind them is not readily apparent.

For example, another theory proposes that it is actually magnetic fields associated with the solar wind that is linking the positions of the gas giants with earthquake triggering times here on Earth.

And another theory states that those links are associated with a type of solar system memory. Effects that we are seeing today are simply repetitions of effects that occurred billions of years ago during times when certain types of forces were important to earthquake triggering processes. And even though those forces are no longer important today, those triggering effects can still be observed because the Earth and planets got locked into those repetitive patterns.

With a sufficiently fast and large computer it should be easy work to check even fairly complex theories that propose that there are links between the gas giant positions and earthquakes here on Earth. I don’t think that anyone has ever tried to run those types of tests.

My own data indicate to me that the sun and moon gravity effects on earthquake triggering times are often the important ones. And I believe that Pavel’s and perhaps even Shan’s and Amit Dave’s data might also agree with that.

Some people might complain that I am deliberately ignoring the international geology specialists’ favorite and widely accepted theory that earthquakes result when “Ming the Merciless” sends his Nitron Ray energy blasts towards the Earth.

I myself have never for an instant believed in that theory and never will, no matter how often the geology specialists insist in public that this theory is the correct one (humor intended). I wonder if Roger likes that one.

These are personal opinions.
