Thanks Lowell and Mark for your input. As one thought leads to the next, I now wonder about the possibility of (don't laugh) pumping lubricant into high-risk faults on a regular basis to allow the plates to slide more easily and release strain with smaller earthquakes over a long period (such as we see in the Hollister section of the SAF) instead of all at once (such as we see in the locked sections). Am I out to lunch on this one?
