QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS EARTHQUAKE

A strong earthquake hit in the Queen Charlotte Islands region
this evening (Local time). This is the largest earthquake within
100 km of the epicenter since Aug. 24, 1949 when a Mw 8.1 hit
near this location. The only other earthquakes of Mb>=5.5 within
this 100 km radius occurred on Feb 28, 1948 (Ms 6.5); Dec. 21, 1936
(Ms 6.0); March 22, 1938 (Ms 6.3); and July 1, 1930 (Ms 5.7).
The earthquake was felt throughout the Queen Charlotte Island
region. For details see:
http://www.pgc.nrcan.gc.ca/seismo/table.htm
The event parameters (NEIS) are:

O: 12Oct2001 05:02:34 52.9N 132.1W MS=5.7 NEIS QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISL REGION

This event occurs in an area which had been expected to be active with
far-field aftershocks from the Kamchatka earthquake of Oct. 8, 2001.

The far-field forecast had said:
34-36 degrees: Southeast Alaska,... Yukon Territory, Canada
43-45 degrees: Vancouver Island,

The earthquake also coincides with a strong reactivation of the current
geomagnetic storm which began about 04:00 UT. The daily summary today
had issued a seismic watch tonight for:

" Areas where seismicity is most likely to be affected are sub- and anti-solar
and at high latitudes."

Queen Charlotte Island was included in that watch (at high latitudes).

Petra: Is this your "deep dark and ugly" or is that still to come?
