Popo Report

Hi All,

Here's today's report regarding Popo Volcano. As the report indicates the dome building and current activity shows signs that an explosive eruption may be at hand in the near future. For those who have not been watching the progress of Popo over the past two years, I will point out the current alert status of "Yellow2" is new. Previously it was simply "yellow". Obviously a sign of upgraded concern.

SEPTEMBER 24, 11:00 h (16:00 h GMT):
In the last 24 hours, the Popocatepetl volcano showed a similar behavior as the day before. There were 22 small to moderate exhalations. These exhalations were accompanied by steam, gas and in some times small amounts of ash. There were episodes of harmonic tremor for less than one hour.
At this moment the visibility toward the volcano is not possible due to clouds.
An aerial fotograph taken on the 20th of September, shows that the dome continues in the interior of the crater. This condition indicates the possibility of explosions in the next hours or days.
The present activity does not represent a change in the forseen scenarios, therefore, the traffic light of volcanic alert is maintained yellow-2. It is recommended not to approach the volcano to less than 12 km from the crater, although the road between Santiago Xalitzintla (Puebla) and San Pedro Nexapa (Mexico State), including Paso de Cortés, is open for controlled circulation.
It is possible that explosive activity as that of July 3, continue in the next days or weeks.
